May 2024 - New Mexico - Stop 16 - White Sands National Park

From Carlsbad Caverns, we drove over a mountain range to White Sands National Park near Alamogordo, NM.  Part of the park was closed off due to an airplane crash a few days earlier.  It was an F-16 from the nearby Air force Base, and the pilot ejected and was OK.  The military was still investigating so were only able to hike 2 trails in the park.  It was very interesting.  The white "sands" are actually gypsum, a product of the unique geology of the surrounding area.  On the way to White Sands NP from Carlsbad Caverns NP, we drove over a mountain range through the Lincoln National Forest.  The scenery was spectacular.

In this one, you can see the White Sands NP in the distance.

The first hike was the PlayaTrail.

The second hike was the Dune Life Nature Trail.

After White Sands NP, we visited PistachioLand in Alamogordo, where they have the largest pistachio in the world.

We had some delicious freshly made pistachio ice cream and checked out the pistachio trees.

That is all from White Sands NP and Alamogordo.  Our next stop is Tucson, AZ.
