We drove from San Antonio to Big Bend National Park (about 7 hours - our longest drive so far). We got there after 5:30 PM so all we had time for was a hike near our campground. Here are some pictures of the park when we arrived.
Here is our campground site.
We saw this roadrunner in the park.
Our first hike was in the evening after we had dinner. It was the Boquillas Canyon trail near our campground. The trail has beautiful scenery and goes along the Rio Grande river with Mexico on the other side. We saw a couple of people in the water, but we were not going to go into the Rio Grande!
The next day we did 3 hikes, one short one and two medium length ones. Here are some pictures from the Santa Elena Canyon trail that also borders the Rio Grande and goes into a canyon until it is no longer passable. Once again, we did not go into the river.
At the end of the hike, we walked across a dry bed part of the river onto Mexican soil. This is a picture from Mexico looking back on the United States.
Next, we hiked the Window View trail (a short one).
Our last hike in Big Bend NP was the Lost Mine trail. It is a tough climb but some beautiful vistas at the top.
That is all from Big Bend. Our next stop is the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas and Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (they are about 30 miles apart).
The scenery is gorgeous! The cactus flowers are so beautiful they look fake. Thank you for sharing your adventures. What's with the smiley face?
ReplyDeleteThe smiley face is our flat stanley. We were planning to include him in all of our new state entry and national park entry pictures, but we might stop that practice soon.
