April 2019 - Trip to Virginia, then drive to Tennessee

I flew from Phoenix to Virginia for a 2 week visit to see family and friends.  Here are some pictures.
A family visit to Yorktown, VA was my first stop.  After that I drove to Myrtle Beach, SC to spend the weekend and play golf with my friend Don.  The first night there, we went to see the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

The Pelicans have a bat dog that works one or two innings.  Here he is in action:

We played the Brick Landing golf course in NC

Back in northern Virginia, I played golf a couple of times in Pennsylvania and Maryland with my friends Dennis and Dan (no pictures), and took some walks in Sterling along the Potomac River.

Back in Phoenix, I started my drive to a house sit in Crossville, TN and the first night stayed overnight in Albuquerque, NM.  Here is a neat quilt that was on my bed in Albuquerque.

I played golf in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri on my way to Tennessee.  Unfortunately, I have no pictures from these courses, but they were nice and enjoyable.  The round in Oklahoma was very windy, but apparently that is a typical golf day in Oklahoma.  I stayed overnight in Oklahoma City, 2 nights in Topeka, Kansas, 2 nights in St. Louis, Missouri, and 1 night in Evansville, Indiana.
In Topeka, I visited the Brown vs Board of Education located at an elementary school (the Monroe School) that was one if the 3 original schools (along with schools in South Carolina and Virginia) involved in the lawsuit that was decided by the Supreme Court in 1954.

In Topeka, I also visited the state capital building

There are pictures of famous Kansans inside the Capital building

My airbnb house was located in the same neighborhood as the infamous Westboro Baptist Church.  I walked past it on one of my neighborhood walks.  Across the street from the church is a rainbow house that also has some notoriety.  Here are a couple of pictures.

From Topeka, I drove to St. Louis, MO for 2 nights.  I went downtown my first day there and watched an inning of the St. Louis Cardinals game from the across the street, where there are restaurants and bars overlooking the stadium.

From Busch Stadium, I walked over to the famous Arch.  It was too late to get a ticket to go up in the arch for that day, but I still got some good pictures.

Also went to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park in St. Louis (St. Louis hosted the World’s Fair in 1904 in Forest Park)

From St. Louis, I drove to Evansville, IN for an overnight stay.  It is on the Ohio River and has a nice walking path along the river.

Arrived in Crossville, TN on April 23 for my indefinite house sit.  The house in a log house about 15 miles from Crossville (the golf capital of Tennessee – who knew?).  There are many golf courses in the area and two very nice state parks with golf courses and hiking trails.
